Resizing a Ring

Your beloved spent a lot of time and effort choosing the perfect ring worthy of your hand. But unfortunately, they got the size wrong… We’ll tell you what options you have to resize your ring.
How to Resize a Ring
If your gorgeous little ring is slightly the wrong size, don’t worry – this problem is easily solved! Women very often turn to jewelers. One reason is to increase or decrease the size of an engagement or wedding ring. Although the process itself is quite simple, some people don’t even suspect that such an option exists. Expert Jennifer Gandia will tell us how to choose the perfect engagement ring. Ring size correction usually takes one to two weeks, Gandia clarifies. This means your “precious” will be returned to you in the shortest possible time!
Cost of Ring Resizing
The cost largely depends on what the ring is made of. If the ring is simple, the costs won’t exceed a few hundred, but if the model is complex, the amount will increase to several thousand.
How Should a Ring Fit on Your Finger?
Your wedding or engagement ring should fit snugly on your finger. At the same time, you shouldn’t experience any discomfort. It should go on easily, and to take it off, you need to pull slightly. If the ring seems too tight, you should consider making it larger. “Ring size also needs correction if it slides off without resistance – this means it’s too big for you,” suggests Gandia.
Sometimes a ring is too large, or you notice that the stone moves from one side of your finger to the other. In such cases, jewelers resort to a trick – they attach two (or one) beads or metal strips inside the ring. This allows the ring to be reduced by about a quarter size. This is more often used so that a ring with a heavy and large diamond doesn’t rotate around the finger.
Usually rings can be increased or decreased by no more than two sizes. You should also consider excessive stress, which can adversely affect the condition of the ring. If there’s very little time left before the wedding, a jeweler can make a special insert in the ring. This is a kind of clip that attaches to the back of the ring, but it should only be used for a short time. “Over time, such a clip can damage the jewelry,” explains Gandia.
How to Resize a Ring
The best option is to turn to the jeweler from whom you purchased the ring. You can ask friends or relatives for contacts of a talented jeweler. It’s important to find someone you can trust with your family treasure. Be sure to look at the craftsman’s previous work, don’t be lazy to read reviews on the Internet.
To make a ring smaller, the jeweler cuts out a piece from it, then reforms the perfect circle, and then solders the ring. After this, the craftsman cleans and polishes the ring. Don’t worry: after the process is complete, you won’t find any traces that the ring was ever cut. The ring will look exactly the same, but will fit more snugly around your finger. The simpler the ring design, the easier it is to work with.
Tip for the Bride
Don’t forget to ask the jeweler if you can take the metal scraps cut from your ring. This piece is worth keeping in case you need to enlarge the ring in the future.
Making a ring larger is somewhat more complex than reducing it. The jeweler stretches the metal, which means the ring can only be increased by half a size. If you need to expand the ring even more, then the craftsman will need to cut it and make an additional metal insert, which they then solder, clean and polish. As with reducing the ring diameter, it’s much easier to increase the size of simpler jewelry. For example, if your ring has a channel setting, it may be necessary to reset the stones when adjusting the ring size.
Types of Rings That Can Be Resized
“To resize a ring, it must be made from a metal that a jeweler can work with, such as silver, gold, or platinum,” says Gandia.
For example, if your diamond ring is studded with stones all around the diameter, then its size cannot be changed. Since stones are set along the entire length of the ring, there’s no clean metal to work with.
Rings made from which metals cannot be resized:
- Tungsten, because it’s too hard.
- Rose gold, as it can crack.
- Some jewelers refuse to work with titanium because it’s very difficult to work with.
If your ring cannot be resized and it slips off your finger, put another more tightly fitting ring over it. Additionally, if you’re in love with your wedding ring but its size cannot be changed, there’s another remedy. You can talk to a jeweler about making a similar ring of the chosen design in the right size, and then you’ll have the ring of your dreams that fits perfectly on your finger!
